Cloud Atlas Manicure

“What wouldn't I give now for a never-changing map of the ever-constant ineffable? To possess, as it were, an atlas of clouds.”  - David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

As some of my friends may know, I have been basically obsessed with Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell since reading the book a few months ago.  It's a book that has literally changed my life - I've read it several times, and it may be my favorite book of all time!  When I saw the trailer for the movie, I knew I had to see it.  I went to the movie on opening day, yesterday, October 26th, and dolled my nails up in honor of the occasion.

Check out more pictures of my Cloud Atlas nails!

I created this manicure using two Rescue Beauty Lounge polishes - Faraway and Bella.  I also used a grey jelly - OPI My Pointe Exactly.  I started with 2 coats of Faraway and used cut up bits of a makeup sponge to paint Bella on in layers to resemble clouds.  I then sparingly dotted My Pointe Exactly onto the clouds to give them more depth and make them look more cloudlike.

If you've ever looked closely at a cloud, you know they're more or less grey, depending on the amount of water they hold.  If you'd like to try this yourself, find any sky blue polish and white jelly polish that you like - you can probably get away without using grey if you want.

The "Jellyness" of Bella's finish allowed me to achieve a subtler and more cloud-like look than if I had used a stark white polish.  I liked the effect a lot!  I've never done a manicure like this before, so I was pleased with my first attempt.

I felt Cloud Atlas, the movie, accomplished a lot and was very interesting- not least of which was the astonishingly beautiful original score composed by co-director Tom Twyker.  However, I still liked the book much more!

Thanks for looking!  I recommend that everyone go read Cloud Atlas immediately - and then see the movie!
